As a child, Alan Babinec was invited by a friend to attend a Tae Kwon Do class. Alan enjoyed what he saw and experienced, continued to study, and in time received his Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He was next introduced to Kenpo, a self-defense system that provides the physical and mental training required to build confidence in a student's ability to defend themselves in real life situations when necessary. In 1989, Alan founded his martial arts studio in Strongsville, Ohio, and has since been recognized for his dedication to the martial arts and his community by being inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame for leadership and as Kenpo's Man of the Year. We met with Alan recently, and listened as he provided this overview of AA Kenpo Karate's offerings;
AA Kenpo Karate is a two time USA Mart Arts Hall of Fame school specializing in teaching leadership, focus, and self-discipline to students from four to sixty-four years of age. We are committed to providing quality martial arts instruction to each and every student. We place a strong emphasis on discipline and respect, and teach our students as if we were working with our own family.
Our vision is to assist in building the local community by helping people get in shape, be safe, and at the same time teach the life skills of courtesy, patience, respect, self-control, and integrity. We help our students achieve self-discipline, high self-esteem, a positive outlook, a spirit of constant improvement, and an attitude that refuses to give up. These are the values and skills that lead to remarkable improvements in academics, careers, and relationships.
AA Kenpo Karate incorporates the best self-defense techniques to provide students with a realistic personal protection system designed for the modern world. Each of our classes is age appropriate and teaches skills that are relevant to each student's daily life. Our Lil' Dragons program is for four to six year olds and focuses on helping younger students deal with bullies, strangers, and other realistic situations they may encounter. For example, they are taught how to deal with someone who is trying to take them away against their will. If you are in a store and you see someone pulling an uncooperative child who is shouting, "No! I don't want to go!" you might mistakenly come to the conclusion that it is just a poorly behaved child. We teach our younger students that if they find themselves accosted by a stranger that they should shout, "Help! It's a stranger! Call 911!" instead.
We teach our seven to twelve year olds how to deal with bullies they encounter in school. When someone starts pushing or poking them in school, they are not taught to strike back, but are taught to say, "Hey, cut that out!" and block their hand away while only using their martial arts skills as a last resort. Through role playing in class they quickly learn when to use their martial arts skills and when it is best to use a different approach. We also teach them the skills they need to protect themselves from mental bullying and peer pressure. They learn to be a leader rather than a follower, and to not allow themselves to be bullied into something they do not want to do.
AA Kenpo Karate offers free seminars to scouting groups in the community, and is the only school recommended by the Girl Scouts of Lake Erie Council to teach self-defense seminars for a variety of badges. Seminars can be conducted at your location or ours, and we guarantee the scouts are going to have a great time.
We offer free, in-school talks on many different subjects, including Stranger Awareness, How to Recognize and Handle Bullies, Halloween Safety, and Summer Safety. All of our school talks are fun, high energy experience where the students learn about respect, self-discipline, and self-protection. We are available to teach a single class, an entire grade one class at a time, or the whole school during normal class periods over a few days time.
Each month we throw a "Parents Night Out" party that anyone can attend for five dollars. These parties start at 6:30 pm and run until 9:00 pm. We provide food, fun, games, and a free karate lesson for your child while you have a Friday night out for yourselves.
We also host birthday parties for children where we combine the fun and entertainment of a birthday party with a high energy, enthusiastic karate class. Our instructors spend the first half hour teaching the children in a specialized karate class. during the next half hour the children will enjoy pizza and soft drinks followed by the Birthday Boy/Girl assisting the instructor as he cuts the birthday cake with a Samurai sword. After the cake, we open presents and enjoy some more karate games and fun.
AA Kenpo Karate is not just another after school activity. AA Kenpo Karate helps children excel in their academic studies, sports, and social endeavors while becoming leaders rather than followers.
